A friend of mine started some Honey locust seedlings. I don't have a lot of forage around me, should I plant a couple here?

What you have pictured is indeed, a honey locust. They are not very good nectar producers, but they make excellent firewood if you are willing to trim those thorns.
We have a lot of those growing on our place. I thought I would prune some of the lower limbs to encourage bigger stem growth, they responded just like the one in your photo. Never again.
Black Locust is the better nectar producer and can be distinguished by only two thorns at the point where a leaflet emerges from a limb.

My observation on black locust, after planting a bunch and then a conversation with a fellow beekeeper:

Honey bees have a hard time working them. They have to force the flower petal open to get at the nectar. Bumble bees have an easy time of it, since their weight helps to open the petals to expose the nectary. So even though my trees are buzzing when they bloom, the ratio is more bumble than honey bee. (I suppose that means there's other easier sources of nectar for them at the same time.)

"When they bloom" is also a consideration. My locusts are not reliable bloomers year to year.
