What you have pictured is indeed, a honey locust. They are not very good nectar producers, but they make excellent firewood if you are willing to trim those thorns.
We have a lot of those growing on our place. I thought I would prune some of the lower limbs to encourage bigger stem growth, they responded just like the one in your photo. Never again.
Black Locust is the better nectar producer and can be distinguished by only two thorns at the point where a leaflet emerges from a limb.
