I started grafting queens last year and have had good success this year. I'm grafting from my "Carolina Mutts"...the super star colonies that are brood machines, work in the rain, and produce surplus honey the first year.
I have re-queened all my hives (after the flow) and plan to do the same next year in an effort to stop the swarming. (I've read that a hive with a queen who has not gone through a year's cycle is less likely to swarm.)
My plan is to over-winter any excess young mated queens in nucs and sell them in the spring. I'm wondering if there would also be a market for the "old" queens pulled from the hives in late July after one year. By next spring they'll be almost two years old.....how about then?
