Officials said on Thursday, February 4, Olivarez Honey Bees Inc. reported that 64 beehives were stolen from a location in Chico. Officials said tire tracks left at the scene indicated that the suspect used a flatbed truck and a pull behind forklift to steal the hives. Officials added the hives were being kept behind a locked gate and the suspect cut the lock to access the area.
Butte County Deputies said on Saturday, February 6, the 64 stolen beehives were located in Stanislaus County, Ca. Officials said the hives were in the process of being rented through a bee broker to an almond grower in Oakdale, Ca. for almond pollination.
Officials said Jacob William Spath of Chico was found in possession of the beehives and was arrested by the Butte County Sheriff's Office on Wednesday, February 17 for grand theft. Officials do not believe Spath is involved in or responsible for any other beehive thefts at this time.

Suspected marijuana-trafficking ring busted at The Peabody Orlando hotel
April 21, 2011|By Susan Jacobson, Orlando Sentinel
The boxes were addressed to "TFO Sports" at The Peabody Orlando, but drug agents say the delivery had nothing to do with athletics. The three larges boxes actually contained a total of 50 pounds of marijuana worth up to $250,000, they said.
A hotel guest who accepted the packages in his room Friday told agents he was holding them for a man named Jose, an arrest report states. TFO Sports is a bogus company.
The man, who was not arrested, told agents he received the packages as a favor to a friend, Jacob Spath, 26, who lives in Chico, Calif., 90 miles north of Sacramento. The boxes were sent from Sacramento to the hotel at 9801 International Drive, an arrest report states.
The pot would sell on the street for $3,500 to $5,000 per pound, agents said.
"That's a moneymaker," said Phil Williams, director of the Metropolitan Bureau of Investigation in Orlando.
On Saturday, Jose Abreu, 30, of Miami Lakes, and Michael Pineda, 31, of Miramar, came to the hotel room carrying two empty duffel bags, which they filled with the marijuana, the arrest report shows. They each were arrested on a charge of trafficking in cannabis.
On Sunday, Spath arrived at Orlando International Airport, where drug agents took him to the Orlando police airport substation. Spath told them he shipped the marijuana to Orlando, they said.
"We got the big guy in this little operation," said Phil Williams, director of the Metropolitan Bureau of Investigation in Orlando.
Spath was charged with trafficking in more than 25 pounds or 300 plans of marijuana and remained in the Orange County Jail Thursday. Bail was reduced from $50,000 to $25,000 over a prosecutor's objection.
Abreu and Pineda were arrested on the same charge but have been released on $25,000 bail each.
Alan Villaverde, managing director of The Peabody Orlando, said this is the first time anything like this has happened in the 18 years he has worked there. The hotel was not involved in any way, other than accepting the package for the guest, who walked in and rented the room, investigators said.
"It's unusual that it ended up at a marquee hotel like The Peabody," Williams said.
Agents are looking for two more people they say are involved.
