The alleged perp, Jacob Spath, is a third generation sprint car racer. Recently his younger brother drove the sprint car Jacob owned (#14KR). A FB post from January 15th of this year states that Jacob was looking for a new driver -- his younger brother is now an accountant for a fire department in Portland.

For a period, Jacob was owner of NorCal Performance, a storefront "speed shop" run out of his fathers transmission repair location in Chico. The biz appears moribund, though Google Street view kicks up a biz sign at the address (as well as stakeside trucks and loader capable trailers).

An online bio of his brother contains the tidbit that Jacob worked in "California Fire Services" -- odd formulation for the CDF, so might indicate the brother spent some time in a Conservation Camp, where the trustee crews are primary wildland fire response. The cell number used by Jacob was originally registered out of Burnt Ranch (Trinity County), in the heart of the Emerald Triangle.

Jacob Spath is on parole for the Florida conviction -- so this bust is going to complicate his life.

At this point I think taking a swipe at the broker might be a little overboard in this instance considering the known facts. No evidence of impropriety divulged so far on the brokers part as far as I know

Are we to add another layer of bureaucracy in our already overly regulated lives by requiring beekeepers and brokers to be "regulated" over the actions of a few bad apples?

Overall the system of contracting for bees in the almonds works fairly well in a manner which is I would say is a great and fine example of free open market driven transactions still left in the world. An occasional theft, broken contract , etc can be dealt with within the current scope of the present laws if they are adjudicated justly according to the law.

I personally would prefer to have a whole load of hives pilfered every year than live under a system where some govgoob with a book of rules thicker than his brains determined my every beekeeping move. I know which one would do more damage in the long run.
Where did I say big brother should get involved?

Just use common sense, spread the word among beeks that this or that broker is dishonest and refuse to do business with him or that grower supports theft by renting stolen bees and see to it the his almonds go beeless.
I'm not and never will be part of that side of beekeeping but I've seen other commodity markets use that kind of pressure. My family is in timber and trust me if a cutter crosses the line word gets out and he quickly is personal non grata and has to find a new line of work. The mills have gotten burned enough that they now require affidavits and every load that crosses the scale and many are tracking every log from stump to saw.

It's the free market in all its glory.

You want to think so. It is the same for our shop lifter...

I got to say warrior pasting the perps name and face on facebook has added a level of protection to a whole lot of shops in our area. We have pictures of his car his license plate and video. People know what to look out for now.
I don't condone steeling of any kind but it is a big difference when the victim is a hard working person who's sole livelihood is affected by a robbery. Walmart can sustain shoplifting where as a retired person needs the additional income just to survive. I could see where a small beekeeper could be ruined by the theft of 64 hives.
