How does a pollen trap work?

Does a pollen trap simply catch pollen that has fallen off the bee? Never tried it so just trying to understand it.:)

The bees are forced thru a size of hardware cloth the is large enough for them to pass thru but not the pollen. It then falls off into a tray and is harvested. Keeping this in mind a trap must be opened from time to time or an alternate entrance provided so they can get some pollen into the hive for brood production.
