Pretty popular in Northern Russia.
Technical name - Tsebro hive (улей Цебро).

This hive is meant for a large frame - typically Dadant frame.
It is meant to be stationary.
Excellent for cold regions.
Technically, this is insulated, double-wall square Dadant.

This guy in the videos here tried this design for himself.
He is in cold and wet North-Western Russia - similar to the extreme Northeast US.
Short, cool summer - long cold winter.
After 5-year trial he is converting his entire apiary into this design.
Stationary, insulated vertical square Dadants.

For his usage case, pretty much every point is the opposite of this post (except the cost/labor involved).
Because any case is strictly regional and local.

End of the winter. The best colonies out of the winter in are in the large, insulated hives.
