what kind of bee?

We have bees that are quite in our face making a home in all of the cylinders of our windchimes. The homes they are building are like sand and remind me of wasps, but these look quite a lot like honeybees, although a bit bigger. Since the chimes are right at our back door, I moved the chimes to the other side of the porch. Now they can't find the chimes and are getting even more aggressive. Does anyone know what kind of bees these are? I am trying to secure their home - they are at my elderly parents' house - because once I leave the oldsters will take to the Raid bottle.
