Hello, I'm fairly new (2nd year), a retired biology professor. I really enjoy watching the behavior of my girls as they are on the landing board. Many of them spend large amounts of time pecking like chickens on the landing board. They will go back and forth over the same spot pecking away. What's up with that?

I am no expert at explaining what it is or why the bees do it, but I know that it is called, "Washboarding".

It is kind of a mystery [still] behavior of honey bees, called "washboarding". I don't do cutouts so I haven't observed it in feral hives.

Now that you're a retired biology professor and enjoy watching the behavior of your girls, it might be a nice "retirement project",..to research this..:).
