Wax Dipping/Painting Hive Bodies

Has anyone had any experience with just getting hot wax and some sort of brush and painting the outside of the hive for weather protection? Would you need to do this on the inside?

I know larger-scale beekeepers use a rosin-wax mixture and dip their hives in that. However, that wouldn't be feasible for me.

The problem is that the wax doesn't soak in very well this way. You need the wood hot to get it to suck up the wax. It's capillary action. The wax will move toward heat. So if the box is hotter than the wax it will run into the wood. If the wax is hotter than the wood it will just clump up on the surface...
