I would use this material but sand the inside surface with coarse grit paper and get most of the finish off. The bees will cover anything they find offensive.
Varnished wood for hive
I stumbled onto several 3 foot lengths of 1x12 shelving.
I am thinking of using it for nuc's and supers.
Will sanding the interior varnish be enough? I know you aren't supposed to paint the interior's but and unsure of shellac/varnish.

I wouldn't varnish the inside if I had a choice, but since it's already varnished, I wouldn't worry about it. The bees will put their varnish over it anyway.
