In order to keep spammers at bay, I am instituting a policy that keeps the membership to current and active members only. Any user that has never posted to the forum and has been inactive for over 3 months, meaning they have never accessed the forum by logging in, will be deleted. Spammers will register and put hyperlinks to websites in their user profile. Rather than spend an enormous amount of time trying to keep this from happening in the first place, a periodic deletion of inactive users will achieve the same result with little time involved.

If you're not a spammer and you're sitting on the sidelines never using your account, you may find your account deleted. Just a heads up.

I will leave this thread open for a bit of discussion if needed, but will lock it down eventually.

Re: User Accounts With No Activity Get Deleted

I understand your problem, but think you should consider waiting longer than a month. Pehaps 2 or 3 months. I don't post frequently, especially in the winter time. Winter time I read a lot of posts, nearly every night. I bet for every active poster you have, there's two "readers" who chime in periodically.

I suppose I can do my reading w/oan account and get the info I need, but if I have to sign up again every 30 days I'm likely to stop posting all together.

Kevtater -

This only affects members who have never posted a message. You've posted 52, so you would never get deleted, even if a year from now you never made another post. I'm basically giving new members 90 days to post their first message. If they don't by then, their membership gets deleted.

Re: User Accounts With No Activity Get Deleted

Good question. Let me back up. I'm taking two items into consideration for deletion. Post count and last day of activity. If an existing member has posted just once, they won't be deleted, ever. I'm starting by deleting existing members that have never posted and have been inactive for over 3 months, meaning they have never logged in. Login gives members access to PM's, Chat, attached images, etc. If they don't login to access that, then their registration means little. They then become suspect as possible spammers.

Some of us travel to places for lengthy periods where there is no internet. Can you stretch that to two months?

Re: User Accounts With No Activity Get Deleted

Although you have your reasons...

I signed up in 2002 and read the site almost everyday.
When I read, I always note the poster join date and pay more attention to long time member's posts than the newbee's.
I only log in to see the odd picture or ask a question now and then.

I guess I'll be one of the deleted next month.

Re: User Accounts With No Posts & Activity Get Deleted

I don't know how to state this any clearer than I have.

"If an existing member has posted just once, they won't be deleted, ever."

Why do you guess you'll be deleted when you've got 43 posts to your name?

If an account is "inactive"; how is removing it protecting us from spammers? Wouldn't a spammer need an active account to spam anybody? Also I sometimes will go several months without logging in; in that case is my account at risk of being deemed inactive and getting deleted or are you restricting deleting to accounts with 0 posts?

Spammers typically aren't after you or any other member. Their goal is to spam sites with propaganda via hyperlinks. If a spammer gets past GlowHost (Spam-O-Matic) firewall at registration, their account becomes part of our database. These registrations tend to have numerous links within the user profile. These links will get indexed by search engines. I have always manually reviewed registrations looking for the spam. Instead, I'm now going to simply delete inactive registrations every so often. This will clean out any spam accounts. Should a spammer decided to post a message and further broadcast links, Spam-O-Matic automatically puts the post in moderation where it will have to be approved first. They get deleted as well as the account and get added to the IP block.

Re: User Accounts With No Activity Get Deleted

Sorry, I just realized that all the posts were waiting to be approved since this is a moderated thread, yet I still saw them and replied to them, even though no one else could see them. Take that into consideration when reading these posts.

Soo,... if I don't post for one month, will I get deleted? Ha ha ha,
Sorry, I had to ask that question once again !

Relax fellas, if someone takes the time to register, you'd think they are motivated enough to post something. Otherwise, what's the point?

I have no idea what a spam is , but, good job Barry keeping this site clean!

They put users at risk.

Some innocent folks think hey it's on Barry's site must be kosher, then get themselves and their computer exposed to who knows what.
