My two hives are doing beautifully. 42 days in from package installation we have a second medium on both hives, plenty of brood, honey in the corners, active queens, active flight patterns, pollen coming in by the legload...drones walking around in good numbers....just what a newbie wants to see.

I did a hive inspection on Monday and at the bottom of two frames were drone cells which had been opened (i must assume) with white, incomplete bees inside. the eyes were clearly visible...the pupa looked just like the textbook pictures.

Why would the workers open these drone cells? Its not a lot, just a few...

They may have died in the cells and the workers are in the process of clearing the cells out. Don't worry, they will be cleared on in short time (or as soon as the girls have a chance to get around to it).

Unless you see a large number of dead larvae I wouldn't be concerned.
