Can a queen throw two different looking workers if she open mated w/different drones? I have a hive that has about 10% Russian looking workers.

I'm no expert, or queen producer here - but I heard a talk at a beekeeping meeting once that explained that queens mate with many drones during their flights. The study actually concluded that a "well mated" queen produced a much healthier and more productive colony due to the diversity of young produced. I do not remember how many sperm sources were considered "well mated", but it was greater than 10.

Hives that contain workers with a broad color and striping range typically show the queen was well mated and carries many different genes. This is a good thing...

I was at bee college last week and if I understand right. Yes, they can the sperm is stored from each drone so she can fertilize the eggs from a different drone. I thought that was very interesting.
