Sometimes that will work, but, I think I would have continued with the cutout and dumped more bees in the deep super, saved some brood, and discarded the debris. Cleaned the area so the bees had no where to go but in the box where the queen is.

I don't know how far you went, but, if brood is left in the tree, nurse bees, housekeepers, etc may very well stay in the tree with the brood. Others may also stay.

Let us know what you find in the morning.

it was starting to get dark and I didn,t have time to remove all of the comb.
That explains it then. And, what you did may very well work. If not, it is not too late to continue with the cutout tomorrow. The queen will still be in the cage, those in the super will be calm with her, the ones left behind to work the brood will still be there, so, no harm.

Let us know what you find. I would really like to know if they abandoned the brood and came to the queen. My best guess is, they will not.
