Top nuc box

I have a nuc that I have a second box of foundation on. What is the best way to encourage the bees to move up and use this box. My plans are to over winter this box and use for making splits next spring. Thanks Jim

Move up a frame of brood into the center position in the top box.

Thanks for the help. I'll give that a try.
I did that a few days ago. Will open the nucs in a few days and see if they took the hint.

After moving the center frame of brood up, and they start drawing it out, you might want to pull it back down. If not, you may end up with this after a week or so:

Personally, I'm very happy with this free comb. I cut across the bottom and it fit perfectly in a deep frame. A few rubber bands and back in it went! But not everyone wants the hassle of having to do that.

you're supposed to an empty frame in its place to replace it

You are absolutely correct. That's why I posted the reminder pic.

I had a lot to do in the beeyard that day and forgot to bring a frame back. A week or so later, this is what I found. Definitely not a problem, though I'll take free comb of the perfect size to put in a frame every day. The bees definitely love it. But putting a frame back is probably still a better idea.

Both upper nucs are in use, so it worked. As they hatch out more workers they should fill up the top box, I hope. By then they'll need a laying queen. If they don't requeen I'll combine them with another nuc that has a queen.
