I have built a top feeder in which the wooden hive box creates a reservoir for the syrup. Can I use a wood waterproof sealant on the inside of the box? I am wondering if it would harm the bees since the sugar syrup would be in contact with the sealant.

Make a "solution" of everclear and propolis. Paint it on. It takes a while to dissolve the propolis but keep a jar of the stuff.

brush on a coat or two of melted wax. either beeswax or paraffin wax.
you could seal the seems with caulk then cover the insides with the wax coat(s) after it sets.
