Might seem like a stupid question (and maybe I'm over-thinking it), but should I not do a split in the evening? I would like to split one of my hives after work today and am wondering if it's a bad move to do it late in the day.

I'd do it. I don't really think it matters what time of day as long as it wasn't cloudy outside. They may get cranky.

With a cold night coming on, I do not do a split less than three hours before evening cool down if I can help it. The bees need time to get organized before the temperature drops or you get chilled brood.

I don't believe there is any "best" time of day to do splits, you do them when you can, however, what Vance said would be true, so I would just do it earlier in the day if I were doing them myself.
