I agree with you that the original edition is great. The latest (still not very new) is fantastic. I don't think they should be considered the same book. The new edition stands on its own. The older edition does so as well.If, like me, you actually WANT and older edition - prior to when A.I. Root began altering and adulterating the material in it - then you can get it, free, from Google:
A Practical Treatise on the Hive and Honey-Bee (Rev. L.L. Langstroth, 1863)
You will be astonished at what HAS been changed - and should not have. The only useful additions of the Root publishing house has been expanding the disease chapter to include the modern discoveries and recent afflictions, which you can read more thoroughly about in other texts, anyway.
