I am in the Central part of deep East Texas about 60 miles due South of Tyler.
I have wintered successfully in 2 deeps, deep and medium, and 3 mediums. I try to leave about 60-90# of honey. Our fall flows are usually excellent, but darker honey, and if bee populations are sufficient and you have a good strong queen they have no problems storing this much during the fall. I take no honey off after about the middle of June in my location. I like them to have plenty of stores late winter/early spring for early spring build up as our main flows start early to mid April.
Yes, I purchased two colonies from the Woodville area last spring and one that I believe was Africanized. I split and requeened and the problem was solved.
Yes, and not all that uncommon. That is why I place my colonies [contrary to recommendation] where they get shade in the late afternoon when it is hottest, I like them to be partially shaded by about 3pm.
You might send a pm [private message] to "Tecumseh" as he is in your area, and offers sound advice.
Kindest Regards
