Anyone have any experience with swarming with hives that have queens with clipped wings ? I purchased two packages last spring from BeeWeaver that had queens with "clipped" wings. Although I have not had any indications of swarming from my hives, I am curious as to how a swarm would be affected if the "old queen" was unable to fly from the hive with the swarm.

As I understand it: Swarm cells occur as normal, then the swarm issues, and the queen tries to follow. She will end up on the ground, and may not get back into the hive. The swarm returns to the hive. Then about a week or so later the swarm leaves with a new virgin. Of course, during this time there is plenty of opportunity for you to intervene.
