Odd behavior from my 2nd year Italians w/original queen. As you can see in the picture they are bearding. They are also a bit lethargic. They are also foraging though, with some bees coming and going.

Hive is 3 mediums and I added a fourth box (honey super) last week.

Thoughts if this is pre swarm activity?

To determine pre swarm activity, it is always best to know what is going on inside.

1. Backfilling the broodnest is one sure sign
2. Lots of bees (of course)
3. More than five queen cups with eggs
4. Lots of queen cells, if they are capped, they are about to swarm - if they have not already

But to answer your question, looking at the entrance, I could not say yes or no, that I would be willing to bet on. Bearding is normal for us, some hives beard a lot more than others.

HTH,
Shane

If they are small enough to need that reducer, not likely to be swarmy. If they are big enough to be swarmy, then that reducer is only getting in the way.

Traffic jam! Traffic jam on the outside = traffic jam on the inside. That entrance is way too small if it is a 3 box colony. Let the girls fly free! :applause:
Ditto!!! Girls gotta breathe!
