I mix 2 1/2 quarts of water to 10lbs of sugar for winter stores and it makes about 1 1/3 gallons of syrup. So I would think 1 gallon of water would probably be too much for fall feeding.

If you're going by weight, you'll be putting in 8 lbs. of water to 10 lbs. of sugar. That's closer to 1:1. I would go with swarm_trapper's mix which is 2:1.

A pint is a pound. 8 pints to a gallon, thus...8 pounds.

Hope this helps!
