Splitting in September.

I wanted toi split my hive. I'm in a zone 7 and thought I may be able to split it in September and introduce a new queen.
I plan to take a few drawn frames from my existing hive and start it in a deep super with the entrance screened for a few days, pollen cakes and sugar syrup.
Is this a good idea or should I wait until spring?

why not wait until spring and spilt the hive into more than two colonies.
i was thinking about doing a split in early july but decided that i will wait until next year.
I am going to split it into two or three nuc's and still have the hive. i plan on buying queens and a couple of packages and expanding
