Splitting in September.

1995 Views 6 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  Andrew Dewey
I wanted toi split my hive. I'm in a zone 7 and thought I may be able to split it in September and introduce a new queen.
I plan to take a few drawn frames from my existing hive and start it in a deep super with the entrance screened for a few days, pollen cakes and sugar syrup.
Is this a good idea or should I wait until spring?

Have you over wintered hives before? One strong hive over winters much better than two weak hives. I think it is probably too late for you to split now - however, if you decide to go for it anyway - use a mated queen and be prepared to feed feed feed.
