FIRST TIME SPLITTER
Background- 18 bar TBH with all but 2 entrance facing combs full to brim of brood or pure honey. Moved combs 1-3 into new hive that had brood and capped honey. Found the queen on a mega bar full of brood with top line of 2" honey capped. Moved her and the comb. We did find three queen cells on a comb and of course left them in place with the original hive. Here's my concern about the new hive we are starting. 4 only bars with brood and honey didn't seem enough bees or comb but our mentor said yes. Was very insistent about no more than that but really couldn't / wouldn't explain the why of it. Feeder board is in with fondant as the divider and one empty bar in front of the four. Should I just go back when weather permits and pull a couple or three more bars with comb and bees from the original and put them in the split/new hive to add to the raw number of bees and resources? Side window, and it just doesn't feel [ok bad word] like there are enough bees in there to ramp up before winter.
