two miles. You can place it right next to the original hive, but the forgers will all go back to the original hive. The nurse bees will stay in your split.

When you make a split, How far away from the original does the new hive need to be?
yep alpha is right. If you make it right next and its during a warm day, just make sure the original hive has fewer bees because the forages will go back there. I guess if the original had 5 brood frames, id give 3 of those to the new split and 2 remain, should even the bee count out a little more.

Mine are always right next to it. You either shake in extra bees, or move both the original and the new hive so they face the old location or you just let them drift... or you can move them two miles away and then move them again, assuming you have the time and a place to do it. I have never had the time and only in recent years had the place...

I am with Michael, about 6-10 inches. I face the new hive the opposite direction and then stuff it with grass...but thats just me.
