Hello,
A little help please. I have one hive. Would like 2 to 4 in case of loss. Two deeps were full 1 week ago. Added a super. Would like a 2nd hive or maybe a new queen this fall. Can't get back to the bees for about 10 days. Would you suggest split, nuc or neither?

Depends on how badly you want a big honey surplus....

Splitting is quick and easy and doesn't cost you any money in bees, but it does cost you in production. You however can mitigate this by moving the queen into the split and leaving the large workforce for the old hive. This way both hives get a fair and equal chance to build up again.

On the other hand you can leave the queen in the original hive, and just shake some bees along into the split and all the field bees will move back to the old hive and leave nice young bees to raise a new queen. This way the split will raise a new queen and not get any surplus for you, but the original hive will build back up very quickly and you will loose little production from it.
