Yes, hence the name walk away split. Thats how i split my first hive. Took the entire medium off with the queen, moved them, and walked away. I have done that 9 times this year....and all have made a queen and are doing good.

How far do you move the hive? Seem I heard somebody say 10 feet but another told me one mile. Which is it?

LOL, i put mine right beside one another...literally inches. I just face one backward and leave the origional facing foward. I also add brush and things in front to make them reorient. Easy enough. I know you are hesitant, just try it.....some will drift back, but you can always add new capped brood for strength....

When doing a walk away split, do most people add a second box on top of the split boxes at the same time? I would think that the box with the queen would need a second box right away while the box without the queen could wait till the new queen hatches. I am thinking I may have to do this in the spring to prevent swarming.

Sometimes they do need it sometimes they don't, just depends on the strength of the hives and is a judgement call. I have on 3, on another 4 i have not. I did during the spring and the split without the queen made som many cells, I pulled 4 splits off the origional split. All 5 hives are doing great and the origional is back up to a deep and 3 meds already.
