Small Hive Bettles

I read that a good natural way to control SHB is to mix 10-12 drops of eucalyptus oil with 1 cup of Crisco shortening. Stir in 3/4 cup of sugar and make into a small patty. Place patty on a piece of wax paper and place on top of the frames.

How does this work? Does it kill the SHB when they eat it? Does it drive them away?

Is it safe for the bees?

If chemicals concern you, the best thing to do is trap the SHBs with swiffer dusting cloths or the beetle blaster trays filled with some cooking oil. I am always wary of putting fuming oils in my hive as it may disrupt communication between bees. Eucalyptus oil is also used as part of a varroa treatment, not sure what long term exposure to that might do.

I use both "Beetle Blasters" and cd traps. For me the cd traps work best and are cheap. That's always a good thing. http://99-40.com/bees/btrap.html
