Personally in North Dakota, I'd close the bottom of the SBB for the winter. It's pretty darn cold there. In the summer it will work fine open. I don't think you'd notice much difference with a slatted rack in addition to the SBB, but I do like them. A little cluster space and less drafty ventilation are nice, but I don't think the difference is very significant.
