Side Entrances

Has anyone used the side entrances, like on the hive modifications over on the Bee Works website?

They have some modifications for the regular hive. An entrance on the side, a different inner cover. It looks like the inner covers are great for ventilation. I was thinking of building some new bottom boards, and was wondering if anyone has tried the side entrance idea. Thought I would throw it out before I get started, maybe find some pros and cons.

I bought the kit to modify a Lang. It works. I think the hive was a bit easier to work, it just had a long front. I think tarheit's vent box is easier. Basically you have an empty box sitting on top of the hive with a lid on it. You can flip the box over and the lid will then cover the air vents.

tarheit's vent box is similar, but the inner cover is built into it and you block the vents with foam board.

I've made a few SBB with the entrance on one 'side'. There is a word or phrase for setting up a hive that way; I just can't remember it right now.

Oh, you get a stand with the kit. It just puts your hive closer to the ground. It is made with 2x4s.
