Original swarm.jpg Swarm on branch (several hundred bees airborne).jpg Swarm on Trap.jpg

A swarm was spotted on 3/30/19. It appeared to be about 6 lbs.

A fellow beekeeper reported the swarm and we set out to retrieve the bees. By the time we arrived at about 2pm the following day, the swarm was about 1/3 of the original size.
There was no wax on the branch.

We shook the bees into a trap about 3 different times. Only about 1/2 of the remaining bees would move into the cozy, lemongrass-ed trap (2 drops). The rest clung resolutely to their branch, so we cut it off and placed it into the trap.

Why wouldn't all the bees leave with queen?
Was the cluster actually queenless, or populated by multiple queens?
