I located in southern Ontario - east of toronto. Last week I took honey supers off of my hives to get them ready for the winter. A few days later I noticed a hive was very full. I put a deep super on it. This quickly filled and became heavy with honey so I put another on on. Is this hive overcrowded? Will it swarm this time of year?? Here is a pic as the bees are very bearded up in the front, completely blocking the entrance. beehive pic.jpg beehive pic.jpg

I have some hives doing this too and they have plenty of interior space. My guess is that these are the remnants of the summer foraging force and they are just....waiting and doing nothing (maybe waiting for the weather to cull them). Also, just so you lose a little sleep tonight, yes, they can swarm at any time. A friend of mine had bees swarm in late December a few years ago (but it is very rare, not impossible though).
