Conventional wisdom seems to vary on this topic. Lots of material I have read recommend the screened however seasoned beekeepers seem skeptical and express concern over the risk of too much airflow?

Living in Chardon OH we have relativley severe winters and warm summers.

Solid, and for those three weeks that it gets hot in late august, ventilate the top end to help draw air up through it. I only use the small opening of a standard bottom year round.
Too much retail just trying to sell more stuff.

I vote solid. We've experimented with screened bottoms in our Langstroth and top bar hives and haven't had any noticeable difference in success rates. While some ventilation may be helpful in certain situations, I lean toward leaving it up to bees to manage it as they wish, rather than forcing airflow upon them.

Cheers,
Matt
