I have been reading the pink pages. And when he talks about splitting the hive if I understand right. He says to remove the queen and put her in a holding hive. Then make your split, putting the new queen in the new hive. Then he said leave them alone for three days, come back and check on them and if everything is ok put the old queen back into her hive.

My question is why do you leave the old queen in the holding hive durning this three day period? Everything else seems to make sense to me.

I don't do it that way. Around the 1st of April I go into the hive and remove 5 frames and put in 5 new frames. Then transfer the 5 frames I took out along with 5 new ones into a new hive body. Whick ever one is queenless I let make a queen, but if you buy a queen you could wait 5 day and see which one did not have eggs after the split and introduce a queen. That is providing you could not find the queen when you made the split.
