I have one hive in one deep and one medium box. Checked it yesterday when they were flying and it was full of bees. I took the medium off and put newspaper down , pored on sugar and dampened it. I put a shim in place and put the medium back on. The medium was also full of bees and still had some honey, but felt alittle light to take care of the number of bees. Did I do this method right? Will they still be able to cluster like they want to? Thanks for your help.

The shim should have simply been placed on top of the two boxes.

You shouldn't have separated the boxes.

It might get a little ugly but I would pull the medium off and rip off as much of the paper as possible and brush/scrape off the sugar. Don't worry about it falling into the deep. Replace the medium, and redo your "Mountain Camp".

Any harm from the sugar falling into the deep, or from weather conditions should be offset buy reuniting the boxes of bees... IMO
