"Location" used to be a required field. Then when VerticalScope implemented a universal login system (across all their various forums), they decided that it was too much trouble to require "Location" at Beesource. I protested, but they didn't care. :(

we've done the research for this. If a user has to input all the information that they may be reluctant to include when they register, then they may not want to post here. Especially with all issues with personal privacy recently. And if they can easily register then it's more likely that they'll come back to respond to answers given to them.
location can always be applied much later on.

Lee, perhaps then you can put a note next to the field that says "highly suggested"?

Anybody that worries should be OK with just county. Have you checked your Assessor's data base to see what is already available? Reverse Look- up?

Hard to hide.

Administer Lee:

I have no doubt that some people are reluctant to include identification information, but there is no reason that your company cannot require a location, perhaps as large as a state. When a person can assume any public handle (name) they want, no one is likely at risk. If your company is afraid new beekeepers will not post, how will they like it when more experienced beekeepers refuse to answer questions without the rudimentary information that can be assumed to exist when location is first identified? Your company bought this blog site when location was a requirement; does your “research” prove the site is better after the change?

Hello there,

This is something we're looking to bring back but at the moment, we do not have the green light to get this implemented.
The workaround for this is a "Welcome PM" letting users know that they should fill out their location under their User CP.

a 'welcome pm' sounds like a great idea ed.

perhaps you could post a draft of it here so that the membership could offer feedback prior to launch?

"Welcome to Beesource! Thanks for registering! We are glad you have chosen to be a part of our community and we hope you enjoy your stay.
For starters, for the community's reference, please add your State in your Settings.
Settings > Edit Profile > Additional Information > Location"

Please provide some feedback,

Thanks!

I like it. Or maybe something like:

"Welcome to Beesource! Thanks for registering! We are glad you have chosen to be a part of our community and we hope you enjoy your stay.
For starters, because all beekeeping is local, please add your State in your Settings.
Settings > Edit Profile > Additional Information > Location"

Just a thought......

I would make it even more explicit and explain that local climate is important to get correct answers to their questions.

Yes, I think the persons state is too vague in many cases. Like in Ontario it is 30 hours drive from SE to NW and about 6 weeks different in season length.

Personally, as a new beekeeper, I would not understand why location is important unless it is explained clearly and succinctly. I would prefer some reasoning as to why location matters for the reasons mentioned above but please be specific as to why it is helpful and how it will help me when I post. I would then be much more receptive to posting my location.

Ravenseye’s additional language is appropriate, and succinct. If it gets too long, people tune out. I would appreciate a new beekeeper asking why “beekeeping is local”. Such a person is inquisitive, and an explanation should satisfy the inquiry; most new beekeepers will accept such statement without question, and will soon learn why date, time, season, weather, elevation, etc. plays a significant role in almost all beekeeping decisions.

it may be helpful to add a line in the 'greeting' informing the new member that there is sometimes a delay after submitting their first post and seeing it show up on the forum.

new members frequently start the same thread over and again several times before a moderator catches it. if there is an attachment for example approval is needed before it show up on the forum.
