My husband and I bought two VERY established colonies this spring. A medium box and one deep on purchase each. We had so many bees we added a second deep immediately when we got them home, now three boxes high. All boxes have drawn comb. The queens in each hive seem to be laying good pattern and we have queen excluders and honey supers on now. My question is, does the queen move through out the levels, filling empty brood comb as needed, or does she just 'move up' and as keepers, we need to swap the lower boxes up and moving her down? These are our first hives, and we are reading everything we can find. We got these colonies and all our gear/supplies from 30+ yr bee keepers that are looking to downsize from 3500 hives!
