Hey all,

I bought a 3 lb package about a month ago. I lost the original queen at some point (couldn't find her 2 weeks ago or last week). Also last week it didn't seem like there was any brood (i'm new to this so could have missed some). This week I found a new queen but still no brood. I feel like the timing is all off and there should at least be some brood by now if the new queen is mated. Is it possible for the queen to not become mated?

Thanks for the help

It will take about 10 days after the queen emerges to fly and mate if the weather is good. If you can see eggs or larva you have a queen. Eggs are very tiny so you might miss them unless you tip the frame around so the sun glints off the bottom of the cell. It is unusual that they would supercede the queen so quickly. With so many postings here of problems with package bees this season, I wonder if the suppliers are shipping the queens unmated and untested .
