I understand that bees use propolis to seal the hive from the outside elements. I don't understand why they also use it in other places. Why do they put it between the frames?

Lorenzo Langstroth observed this behavior about 150 years ago. Bees build comb in any space over 3/8 inch. They propolize every space less than 3/8 inch. Propolis keeps diseases, pests, and parasites from destroying the hive. If small nive beetles, wax moths and other invaders find a space to hide or lay eggs, they will. Propolis eliminates these spaces. Propolis is a wonderful mixture that keeps their environment nearly sterile.
