Watch them. If they are putting their tongues in and sucking nectar then that's what they're after. If they have pollen packed in their legs when they leave that's what they're after. The pollen on their legs is hard to miss.

A beautiful Peony is in full bloom in our yard and the bees seem to be having a feast. Are they gathering pollen or nectar??
