Sumac is not the same poison sumac, just like oak is not the same as poison oak. Sumac is a small tree with red berry clusters. Poison sumac seems to be different in different places that I've lived. What I call poison sumac was being called poison oak when I was in South Dakota. What I call poison sumac is a plant with leaves that look like a sumac but it doesn't grow into a large tree like sumca does sometimes, and doesn't have the red fuzzy clumps in the fall like sumac does. Both have similar leaves and both have leaves that turn red early in the fall. It's the red fuzzy clumps after they are dry, that people use in their smokers.
