I have mostly carniolan hives...Will they overwinter with one deep and 1 6/58 super.....I hear that they overwinter with less stores than Itilians......

Mine seemed to last winter.

I went with 1 deep and 2 medium supers last year. I had 1 full super to take from each of them this spring.

I overwintered 3 carniolan single deep hives last winter, and all did fine. Although, I put 3 inch thick insulation on top (with plastic wrapped around sides)- insulation makes a world of difference in how much honey the bees eat. It makes it much easier for the bees to move around and get to stores also. In fact, there was a 30 degree difference under the insulation vs. outside... in other words, insulation makes it feel 30 degrees warmer for the bees.

I think I will do two deeps this year so that next year I can do an easy split and not have to worry about the deep issue.....
