I have read that the SHB borrow in the ground around the hive's to have there young. So my question is why not use Ortho Max lawn granuales all around your hives and through out your property? I don't see how it would harm the Bee's because they don't forage on the ground. And after a rain the insect killer soaks in the ground!

Good idea? Bad Idea?

I don't think it is a bad idea, just a fruitless one. If the larva have hatched and eaten enough out of your hive to reach maturity, the damage to your hive has been done. Drenches will indeed kill out any larva that happened to escape but it will be very few unless you actually had a hive be overrun and you didn't visit it for a month. IMO it isn't worth the cost nor the effort.

If you want a better mechanism against SHB, then use screen bottom boards with oil trays underneath. I am a firm believer in these for southern humid locations like we have. I kill countless SHB's before they even get in the hive with a BeetleJail entrance oil trap http://beetlejail.com/store/index.php?route=product/product&path=39&product_id=55 and screen bottom board oil traps http://www.eheartwood.com/bee-boxes/beetle-mite-trap-bottom-w-tray-10-frame.

You can build the oil trap bottom boards, but the entrance trap looks tricky.
