My friend found an original edition in excellent condition. Any idea on what it would be worth?

I saw a copy at a used book store today. It was a relatively new hard cover, from the mid-70's, in good condition for $40. Right next to it was a hard cover copy of 'ABC's And XYZ's Of Beekeeping' by A. I. Root from the same time period, in similar condition, for $30.

If he has an 1853 first edition, you are talking considerably more than the 1970's $40 copy. Don't know the current going rate but as a book collector and former used book dealer, I'd love to have it. (If it is actually the 1853 first.)
