wow my 6th yr with bees and I am embarrassed to ask this question, but here it goes...

Does open, uncured nectar/syrup count as "winter weight"? I ask, because I had an unexpected dead out and when I assessed the damage today, I noticed the hive was heavy as heck. But as I started pulling frames, I noticed the dead clusters of bees were on the open nectar parts of frames with a band of nice capped stores right at the top of the same frames. apparently I fed them up to weight a little too late this fall and they didn't have time to cure and cap their stores. As a precaution, since some of my other hives' weights are made up of a good amount of uncapped stores (I opened them and checked), I put emergency feed on top of them just as a little insurance. I'm sure on days like today and yesterday when it went well above 50 they can utilize the uncapped stores, but when the temps drop again, they will cluster and run into potential problems.

Am I on the right track with my assumptions?
