I'm getting ready to install a new package, in the past I used a deep and I knew to wait till they had that 80 to 90% full to add another deep, do mediums follow the same rule? It just seems a medium isn't big enough for a 3# package. And maybe I should put two toghether. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks Rhonda

I put 3# packages into 8-frame mediums last year and they did just fine. Just feed, keep an eye on them, and add hive bodies as needed. Note: One of these swarmed 6 weeks after installing them, so give them plenty of room.

I prefer one. I've started them in everything from a five frame nuc (with bare foundation) to five medium ten frame boxes. They all do ok, but the ones in the nucs take off faster. It takes a certain amount of heat to draw comb effeciently and that is much easer for a small package in a small space rather than a large space, espeically during cold nights like we get in the spring.
