I tried using the OTS Queen Rearing method this past season, with marginal success....2 possible problems..1. determining when the egg is still only 1 or 2 days old. 2. When notching cells, the guide says to notch down to the mid-rib. Where exactly is the mid-rib? Thanks for any guidance in preparation for next season.

Only cut the minimum amount on comb that raised brood. Otherwise, you might pop the cocoon out and loose the larvae. Cut the whole depth of the cell, so the wall isn't complete. This allows them to make the cell wider. New comb is better, soft, and doesn't have cocoons. You might not have to notch with it. Find the larvae you want and cut.
