Yesterday afternoon while watching both hives I heard an odd sound from one. The sound of an insect chewing wood is what it reminded me of. There were bees 'walking the line' along the entrance (reducer still in on the largest opening). They were doing their cleaning thing it appeared. I didn't see any bumble type bees making a hole anywhere so I dismissed that. I wouldn't have thought they would make this much noise. Just curious more than worried. Any ideas?

I reduce my entrence to 4" for summer smaller for winter.

Helpes to retain heat. I am in Michigan.

Helps the guard bees. Is my main reason.

They are from a package so are still building up. Just don't look blocked at all and opening up further would be more room for non bees to come in. I could be way wrong so feel free to offer what you can.

My first year keeping bees I also heard what sounded like chewing. Sure enough, the bees chewed a small hole in the bottom back of the hive just large enough for 1 bee to fit through. If I hadnt watched them do it, I wouldnt believe it. They used it continuously to come and go in addition to the regular entrance.

I havent heard or seen that behavior since.
