I started both my hives this spring from packeges, one in april and one in may. I check my hives regularly, once a week, just to see what is happening. I am noticing brood and population build up but very little honey. when I see honey, it is just a bit in the corners of the frames. When will they start to build up for winter? :s

Your bees have been consuming more than they are making. Sounds like you better start feeding.

I have had syrup on them since I installed them. They stopped taking it about 2 weeks ago.

Brood, population build-up - all sounds OK to me. Not sure if opening the hive every week is a good thing?

They are very calm when i am in the hive. I go in often to learn as I am new. They do not seem to mind.

I'm having the exact same problem. We have had a terrible summer (if that's what you want to call it.) When the sun does come out, they fly like crazy but they have been cooped up inside most of the time. They are still taking syrup but not storing it.
